Call for Doctoral Consortium

We cordially invite doctoral students to submit extended abstracts to the Doctoral Consortium of the ICHI 2017.

The Doctoral Consortium offers a supportive learning opportunity for doctoral students who pursue research on health informatics problems. Participants will discuss their work in progress and receive feedback and guidance from the ICHI 2017 Doctoral Consortium mentors. To ensure that all participants have the opportunity to present their work, all doctoral students whose extended abstract is accepted will be scheduled for a rapid-fire talk where each participant has 5 minutes, with auto-advancing slides, to present a synopsis of their work. These rapid overviews will be followed by a poster session where participants and mentors can discuss research in greater details. Selected participants may also be invited to give a longer oral presentation. The Doctoral Consortium will close with a panel or round-table discussion on topics relevant to doctoral students (e.g., dissertation proposal, dissertation execution, job search, and grant seeking).

All topics described in the Call for Papers are eligible for extended abstract submissions.

The ICHI 2017's Doctoral Consortium highly encourages students from under-represented groups to participate, such as female and minority students.

Travel Awards

The top 10 successful doctoral students to be accepted for the Doctoral Consortium will receive a travel award to participate in the Conference. Details of the award and instructions on how to formally apply are here.

Proposal Preparation

To be considered for the Doctoral Consortium, students are requested to submit the following items:

Cover Letter: A 1-page cover letter justifying what the students hope to gain by attending the Doctoral Consortium.

Extended Abstract: A 1-page abstract of a research project (ongoing or planned) in the IEEE Proceedings Format available here for LaTex and Word (please, be sure to use the template’s conference mode, see template documentation for details).

Submission and Reviewing

Doctoral Consortium proposals should be submitted electronically by email to the Doctoral Consortium Chair. Reviewing will be done by the Doctoral Consortium Chair and independent reviewers as needed. Doctoral Consortium Proposals will be accepted based on quality of the proposal, relevance to ICHI, and perceived value of participation to the doctoral student.

The Doctoral Consortium Chair and conference organizers will work on ensuring that the doctoral consortium is well-attended and has a vibrant discussion environment.
